a light dawns

Although he mouthed platitudes about saving us, Ron had a practical reason for taking us with him. He needed me on his side, in order to take the motor home. Up to then, it had never been a problem, but now with Jack in the mood he was in, Ron was taking no chances. The motor home was registered in both Jack’s and my names, so as long as I was with him, Jack couldn’t accuse Ron of stealing it. And he needed Philip for help and financial security because Philip could always get a job.

Everything had to be accomplished quickly, quietly, and with the utmost stealth, Ron warned us. We obeyed. The motor home was parked in the carport the boys had built into the hillside, facing out as Ron had ordered. He had craftily designed the carport so that we didn’t have to pull the motor home out into the driveway in order to load it. There was a ladder mounted on one side of the concrete wall that we could climb, so we could load the vehicle through a topside port from the ladder without being seen by the neighbors, or from the house.

While Jack was at work, Ron gathered Janet, the other adults, and the children in the family room and made me take a vow that I agreed willingly to go with him. I had to repeat after him and in front of the others, “I solemnly swear that I am willing, in the sufferings of Christ, to leave my husband, my home, and all my possessions, in order to save our lives from an evil man, and not be destroyed by God for my complicity in Jack’s sins against God.”

By then, Ron had us completely convinced that Jack was possessed by Satan and would ultimately destroy us all, condemning our souls to eternal hell. Given that horrible thought, I was not only willing but eager to take the oath and to flee with Ron, in order to save myself and my children from certain destruction by God.

“We have no way except to flee this evil, as God has commanded me to, and go elsewhere, where we can live our lives in Christian peace in the service of God,” said Ron. “Therefore, we must go quickly, tomorrow morning, without Jack knowing.” He instructed us on how we would accomplish our departure. “While Jack is asleep,” he told us, “you will pack and gather everything into the family room that you want to take. Kathleen will then sort through it and decide what goes and what doesn’t. Johnny and Tommy will help everyone load the motor home from the ladder.
